1. The university selects your dorm mates for you. You are matched with other students who are in your same class or major. The university selects your class schedule, determining what classes you'll take, what time you'll take them and who your professors will be. You have the same classmates in every class. Considering the fact that you also live with these same students, you really get to know them well. You stay together for four years of undergraduate work.
2. Dorm lights are turned off for you at 11:30 p.m.
3. Hot water is turned on from 8-10 p.m. only.
4. Sixteen girls live in one four-bedroom dorm room. Two toilets (a ceramic hole in the floor that can be flushed.) No carpet or furniture other than bunk beds and desks. No cooking facilities. Everyone eats at the school canteen (cafeteria).
5. No computers allowed for freshmen.
6. The government controls the heating of rooms. (This is true for all of China, not just university buildings.) Heat's on November 15 and turned off February 15.
7. No one's ever heard of a school dance.
8. No laundromats. Hand wash and hang dry. (Notice all the clothes hanging to dry outside their dorm rooms.)

Once again leaving me feeling blessed and spoiled.
I would probably be doing my homework by flashlight a lot.
Lights off at 11:30? That would have been a really good rule for me as a college freshman. That's about the time I started my homework.
