A great class activity to challenge students' English skills is to team them up with a partner and have one describe to the other the details of a picture projected on the screen. His partner has his back to the screen and must draw what is described. You can see from these photos that our students really get engaged in this. My favorite part of this assignment is seeing how they laugh as they enthusiastically share their results with classmates after the draw-er looks at the screen for the first time when finished. The photos we select to have them draw are always from our collection of fun family activities as we like to give our students any glimpse we can of our family life. This photo on the screen was taken during a grandkid balloon-between-the-knees race at our family reunion last summer.
I just love the way these students so eagerly respond to any class activity we introduce. Class involvement is new to them as they've spent an educational lifetime listening to classroom lectures and reciting from rote when called upon by their Chinese teachers.
