BEGGARS

Whenever Dave and I leave the apartment, we stuff some bills in our pockets to conveniently pull out for the beggars we'll encounter. The beggars near our campus are non-aggresive; never approaching us or calling to us. They simply sit on the sidewalk with their bowl in front of them. One old lady always has her head down, rocking back and forth, but when we place the bill in her bowl, she always looks up at us. The ones that are hardest for me are the mothers with their babies in their laps. For some reason it's easier for me to give to beggars here than those back in the States. Since living here, I've had a hard time believing most in the United States comprehend what true poverty is.
