Xi'an has two T.V. stations; both owned and controlled by the central government. One of them wanted to interview a couple Americans about the Financial Crisis and Dave and I got picked. We taped the program today and had a fun time answering questions about how the crisis has changed American's every-day life (we've been living in China since it's happened) and why Americans live with credit card debt (we've never had any). When they asked us to be interviewed we explained we've always been pretty frugal folks and were probably not the best people to answer these questions, but they figured since we were Americans, that was enough for us to qualify. The subject of debt intrigues and mystifies Chinese, who are people who save up and then pay cash for cars, apartment purchases and everything they own. They simply cannont understand buying something you don't have the money to pay for.

Reminds me of that SNL skit about credit. Google "SNL skit Don't Buy Stuff" Your English students would get a good laugh.
